I too have not used the health maintenance section for the same reasons but it seems to be a reasonable tool for reminders/popups for immunizations and screening tests. For MIPS/MACRA, the SMARTflow tool helps to complete the measure requirements including placing appropriate responses in the plan section. I was not aware it could be used as an alert tool.

I haven't played with the health maintenance module in a long time. I remember if any item was due there was a generic pop-up that asked you if you wanted to open the health maintenance section. It became a nuisance because you had to click past it to get to the chart. The Smartflow pop-ups don't get in the way and are specific for one item. I really cannot stand all the government required documentation in the plan section. I get reports from specialists and the notes are unreadable, full of government mandated junk. The worst EMR, which seems to be more and more popular, I assume for billing purposes, has the note sections divided into a bunch of unreadable boxes. I personally think it is becoming a patient safety issue.
